Where would I go to ask about getting 2 new rats?

Post by catbug » Thu Aug 13, 2015 8:45 pm

Me and my partner are looking at getting a pair of female rats in the next month or so, I've had rats all my life, fostered, rescued and from birth so I'm not new to the rat world, but it's been 3 years and I would like to get my rats from someone responsible, humane and reputable for healthy rats.

My partner wants hairless rats and my favourite are dumbo, we've pretty much settled on getting dumbo rats as there are less health risks and less susceptible to the cold, unless we miraculously found a haired and hairless pair...

Where would we start to look into this? I'm fine with cage purchasing and setting up etc, it's just the sourcing healthy rats that I'm not clue'd up on.

Thanks in advance!

Joe.

Try looking on the NFRS breeders list for ratteries close to you,
http://www.nfrs.org/NFRS_Breeders_List.pdf

Be aware that nobody ethical breeds hairless rats due to the increased health issues they have.

Also bear in mind that while all good breeders should be selecting for healthy rats, we can never 100% guarantee that a rat won't go on to have health problems so I would also avoid anyone who makes those claims. Good idea to ask them about the general health of their lines though.

And I will add... rats travel well, so don't restrict yourself to breeders on your doorstep, and breeders sometimes travel long distances to shows so if there is a show nearby you might be able to arrange to meet and or collect rats from a breeder there. Good luck sourcing your dumbos :luck:

I also wouldn't limit yourself to either or both being dumbo - it makes no difference to the temperament of the rat and some breeders (like me lol) generally home in pairs of one top ear one dumbo to help owners tell otherwise similar rats apart.

I'm filling in application forms and not requesting anything in particular, we don't really want albino white but I haven't really got any strict rules on what we want. we just want rats! :D

Thank you for all the help everyone!

I've never heard of dumbo rats being less prone to health problems or the cold? do you know where you read/heard that?

Well done on not getting ratties from pet shops, good luck with finding some lovely new friends

I think there is one NFRS registered breeder who claims to be bedding hairless with an aim of making it robust enough to be standardised. I don't know her so can't vouch for her but if that is something you're interested in then perhaps start a dialogue with her. The rattery is maidenhair.
