Re: Cheap and easy dry food for rats

What dog food are you using, I'd be interested in seeing the nutritional profile and ingredients list. Just because its like a generic rat pellet doesn't mean its any good alas, there's some pretty appalling foods out there.

Re: Rat rations which one?

I particularly like mixing rat rations no 7, 11 a (about half as often) and its often easier to keep rats in good condition on it.

Re: adding seeds to shunamite mix

You want to aim for about 5% of the mix being seeds generally, that ends up being about the right fat content

Re: Lump on face

Id want her on amoxycillin and flagyl as two very useful antibiotics that do well against facial abcesses. you want to start her on it asap. you don't want to nfrs around with facial abcesses. if she's on both of those antibiotics then you'll also want her on a probiotic as they are pretty harsh on ...

Re: Lethargic and side sucking :(

Honestly this sounds very much like a possible heart issue, the cold extremeties, lethargy and breathing issues often come part and parcel of it. I would ask your vet to try him on fortekor and frusomide for a week, if he perks up on that then he has a heart problem, x-rays etc are just not reliable...

Re: Preputial glands

you can get slightly enlarged glands, you can feel them regardless of if they are abcessing or not anyway, but i've come across a few on rats that are more prominant too. If a rats had an abcess in them before its also possible to get a bit of scar tissue around them that makes them always feel a bi...

Re: Beaphar spot on <300g rats

I'd recommend getting some harka metcin from rat rations, it keeps for a while so if you like to do it "just in case" then its good to have in. It works out at approx 1 drop for under 250g, 2 drops for up to 500g and 3 for over. If you have specific weights and want it dosed accuratly then there are...

Re: Some advice please? Lethargic, resp issues?

Its better to split it in to 2 daily doses, if you let us know her weight and the strength then the dose can be checked.

If you've started the antibiotics then i would finish the course, otherwise you risk building up antibiotice resistance.

By chewing do you mean she's Bruxing? This is grinding the teeth together and is the rat equivalent to a cat's pur or human hum. It can be done when they are happy or content, or if they feel uncomofortable or in pain as a kind of comforting measure. How's she responding to meds and how old is she? ...

Re: Silly question? Where's their colour go!?

My understanding of the way that roaning works and the thing that makes roan different than a perminant marking like say hooded is that each time the fur moults there is chance that the pigment producing cells switch off, this is more likley to happen the further from the central line of the spine, ...

Re: Wine rack out of pine wood safe for rats?

Completely agree, the issue with phenols is very much linked to exposed surface area, the smaller the bits effectively the larger the surface area so the more phenols that are given off. This is where the difference between sawdust (never use with rats) and shavings (certain types may be ok to use w...

Has he got any abcessess around his body at the moment? The other thing this could be is sceptic artrtis which is caused when a joint becomes infected, uesually caused by an abcess elswhere on the body. If you think it might be this then you want to get him on Amoxycillin asap as it can make them il...
