Re: Strange vocalisation?

like this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JaoSxpq6Lw To be honest if I heard that sound coming from one of my boys I would have taken him to the vets to get his lungs checked. To me (without having the rat with me to hear where the sound is coming from) it sounds like a breathing problem, which w...

Re: Black nipple

I don't know what it is- but I do know that my female spayed cat who has never had a litter has nipples which went black and hard. We did point it out to the vet and he said it was nothing to worry about. As in that picture, with our cat it was just one or two nipples which went like this. She has n...

Re: Large lump, elderly rat - chance op or not?

If you don't do the op, how long do you think she will have a good quality of life before the lump gets too painful or big? If you think that it will only be a short amount of time before things get too much for her, if it was me, I would chance the operation as if it is successful, she may have qui...

Re: The dreaded PT

I have had to deal with pt's twice. Both times I decided to give steroids a go. With Merlot, steroids worked wonders. We had to play around with the dosage for a week or so but when we did, it made such a difference. She went completely back to normal, eating, playing, bossing everyone about :D the ...

Exotic vet in Suffolk

Just wondering if anyone in the Suffolk area had heard of Catherine Thomas? Seen an add for this website (http://www.exoticvetsuffolk.co.uk) and am kinda intrigued. I know a lot of vets who say they are small animal specialists turn out not to be too clued up on rats and exotics so it's nice to see ...

Re: Blanket treating vs symptomatic treatment

Er, you can't have an asymptomatic sign! Asymptomatic means no symptoms - i.e. no signs.
Sorry- I didn't know what the term meant and thought it meant unrelated symptoms perhaps caused by another underlying problem. Which is why I wondered how you would decide who to treat and who not to treat.

Blanket treating vs symptomatic treatment

Thought I would make a new thread for this: I have only treated a well rat as a precaution once, and that was beacause we had some new rescue rats that came to us unwell, and then my existing group got sick or more sick. Milo didn't have any symptoms but he was a fragile old man so got a course of a...

Re: rat with red nose

This is not usually necessary, I think mostly I have seen this happen when there has been some kind of viral outbreak, and the antibiotics are to try and keep on top of any bacterial problems that may worsen as a result of the virus. (Not sure I have explained that quite properly). That's interesti...

Re: rat with red nose

Do you know what the make of the litter was? Some newspaper based litters are dustier than others. I use biocatolet which I buy from pets at home which I find quite good. If you keep an eye on them for the next few days, see whether the sneezing only occurs on certain areas etc. If the sneezing does...

Re: rat with red nose

Where are your girls from? Their origins can be a big help in working out whether the snuffles are due to new home smells or a respiratory infection. For example when I brought my breeder boys home, I didn't worry about any sneezes in the first week as I was confident it was just a new environment a...

Re: do rats nails need to be trimmed?

If they are a little scratchy- a couple of mine seemed to ignore claw trimming when grooming and I was left with angry red marks on my arms and neck when used as a climbing frame- you can buy special perches that help with keeping claws slightly blunt like this one: http://www.petsathome.com/shop/en...

Re: rat with red nose

The past history of your rats can also help with a diagnosis. Are they from a pet shop/rescue or a breeder? Obviously any rat of any history can get respiratory problems but I would be more concerned that it's not just new environment sneezes if they had come from a questionable background.
