Re: Buck grease

Yes that sounds like buck grease, it will lessen as they age but it's nothing to worry about. 550g sounds about right but without seeing them it's impossible to say if it's a good weight for them, do you have any pictures?

Re: Eye Infection?

His eye looks fine to me aside from some slight puffiness and porphyrin? I wouldn't use water on it (I know water in my own eyes isn't pleasant), if your concerned perhaps put some eye drops on it like viscotears if you have it. Personally though, if it was my rat I wouldn't be worried as it looks f...

Re: Fluid on lungs and struggling to breath

You mention having lost 5 rats within 6 weeks, were they all different causes? That's a lot of rats to lose on such a short period (assuming you mean they passed away), if they were similar things I'd be concerned about the possibility of a virus. Fluid in her lungs is very serious, the fact that yo...

Re: abscess

It has only been a day ;) Have you drained it or do you mean its still full?

ETA: sorry just re-read your post. If its been drained it'll probably be healed within a week.

Re: abscess

Well, tonight I popped my biggest ever abscess on my lads face and ended up covered in abscess juice so yes I can assure you it will be grim, particularly if it's runny  I wait until they have a head then soak it with warm saline and give it a bit of a squeeze, if it's ready to go then I'll co...

Re: Persistent ear infection/head tilt.

I haven't been able to find any information about draxxin for ear infections, I'll discuss it with the vet one he's finished this lot of abs if he gets worse again. We've found that generally once they get a tilt it stays. I am expecting there to be some tilt remaining but as he actually improves on...

Re: Zithromax affecting boy badly? Help!

How long have they been presenting symptoms for? I don't understand why Niki is being treated if presenting no symptoms? Have they been treated with anything before? From what you describe I wouldn't say it was an emergency vets situation unless he's lethargic & his breathing is laboured. Though obv...

Re: Dry coat advice please

Pretty much yeah! Also more leafy greens. Some rat's will have dry coats though even if you give more oil, bucks particularly tend to have dry coats as they get older. I don't really worry about some having dry coats, I'd only increase the oil if the younger ones look rough too or about a week befor...

Persistent ear infection/head tilt.

One of my lads has had a head tilt since October which has previously responded to meds but keeps returning. Initially he was given steroids (liquid to dose daily, can't remember the name) and 3 weeks of Baytril, I did ask the vet for synulox but he insisted Baytril was the better one for the proble...

Re: Do your rats use their wheel?

Well I've been proven wrong! My boys just changed cages and I put the wheel near the bottom, shortly after my oldest lad (28 months with hld and a ground dweller now) climbed right into the wheel for a very brief stroll lol.

Re: Do your rats use their wheel?

I said other lol. Currently none of my rats use a wheel for its purpose, it's mainly a bed or toilet, however they have used it for its purpose a lot in the past. Half my group used the wheel a lot when they were younger but the younger 3 never have much/at all. I have always got one in there though...

Re: Really upset with FR

You have to remember that this is a family forum and that not everyone wants to hear about periods, perhaps male members, those who have fertility issues, those younger members who are struggling with puberty etc. As the general chat section is general, it is more likely that people will stumble ac...

Re: Really upset with FR

I'd rather periods and to a certain degree sex and sexuality was freely discussed with and around children, not hidden away like it's something to be ashamed/embarrassed of. Yes ideally parents should be the ones to educate their children on sensitive matters, but frankly if they're that concerned a...

Re: Really upset with FR

Personally I care about the welfare of rats as a species, not soley my own rats and not just pet rats either. On that basis I welcome feeder breeders coming here to ask for advice, we care about the rats welfare and by coming here they clearly do too. By asking for advice on a reptile forum that get...
