Re: Issues within the group after complicated neuter

I had the same issue with one of my boys after neutering. He was still so aggressive I had to keep him seperate from the group for 3 weeks - afterwards the reintroduction was no problem at all. He was mobbed and sniffed all over but after a couple of minutes the excitement was over and everything wa...

visit to emergency vet

I had my boy Blaze neutered 2 weeks ago at my local vet. When we arrived back home I checked the wound and could see some stitching. I should have gone straight back because at the other vet I used before the stitches were always invisible. Foolishly I just decided to monitor and everything seemed a...

Re: What's wrong with Phil?

I had Phil put to sleep today. He deteriorated very quickly, he started to fall over when he groomed himself and also started to nip me when I tried to stroke him. He was either sleeping or walking round and round the box in the cage. The last few days I mixed metacam into the soft food in case he w...

Re: What's wrong with Phil?

Thanks, for your replies.
I've read the rat health guide article and have to agree it probably is a PT. I was sort of hoping it might be an ear infection but that would have cleared up by now with the antibiotics. :(

What's wrong with Phil?

I am very worried about Phil (20 months old). About 10 days ago he started losing weight. When I watched him closely I realised he was rooting around when I was scatterfeeding but he didn't actually eat - he just picked bits up and put them down again. I tried him with some of the soft mix I've got ...

Separate from group?

My old boy Merle (34 months) is suffering badly from HLD, he is basically a floor rat now dragging himself around but otherwise still perky and in reasonable health. The issue are the other 3 boys (all around 18 months) who bully him quite a bit since his health/mobility has deteriorated. They jump ...

Around £15 at my vets. My rats get buried in my garden.

Re: Metacam dose

Thanks Rhian. Yes, it seemed a lot for one dose so I gave him only 5 drops when we got back from the vet. Will give him 2 doses tomorrow then.

Metacam dose

Phil's had a noisy chest and has been on baytril for 2 weeks now and a pinch of bisolvon for the last week. Went back to the vet today and got more baytril and also metacam. It's dog metacam 1.5mg/ml and the vet prescribed 10 drops once a day. Phil weighs around 460 g - is this dose OK? I just measu...

Re: Broken leg?

The vet just called and there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with his legs. They think it might either be a stroke or an inner ear infection. I noticed this morning before I took him to the vets that he was moving around a bit more but just round and round in a circle. They have given him a stero...

Broken leg?

Found Daryl (he is 22 months old) 3 hours ago pulling himself along the floor of the cage unable to walk properly. I don't know what happened - did he fall or got a leg stuck in between the bars? About an hour earlier he was absolutely fine, running in the wheel. I've put him in a carrier and gave h...

Re: Abscesses from bites?

OK, to be honest I have zero experience with abscesses - this is the first time in 4 years of rat keeping that I have to deal with any. It seems that every bite develops into a lump on my two new rats. So - do abscesses always come to a head and burst/ooze or do they sometimes just heal without open...

Abscesses from bites?

Both of my new boys seem to have developed abscesses from the bites they received during intro attempts. Midge has got two very close together either side of his spine and Phil got one on his neck. I slightly pressed on one of Midge's and some gunk came out. Is it OK to put purple spray on it?

Re: Baytril for young rats

Thanks for your replies. Picked up the baytril for the smaller boy little while ago and this is what found in the boxes: two more syringes of 0.1 for the bigger boy and 7 syringes of 0.14 for the smaller (150 g) boy! On the label it says to give 0.04 once a day! And I thought we clarified things thi...
