Re: Tic tac wheel

Has anyone got any experience of the plastic ones. Are they flimsy as they look like soft plastic. My lot defo use wheels but I'm still looking for a brand that is quite as so far any of the so called silent ones are anything but. I have a plastic one for my African Pygmy hedgehog- it's perfect for...

Re: Fresh foods my rats ate today

My poor rats were too hot on Tuesday and sleeping on the ladders and sprawled on the floor of the cage. I gave them a fan which helped blow the hot air about a bit and they seemed to like it. They also got a dish of water with frozen peas to dunk for. They loved them  JarJar looking a bit hot a...

Re: Please help with awful rat smell!

I drilled holes in the bottom of my rat's Sputnik pods so the wee doesn't stay in there with them. Hammocks get rotated in the washing machine- I don't wash them all at once, but change one for a clean one every day (I have at least 2 sets of hammocks). Some substrates seem to be better than others ...

Re: How often to wash hammocks

I just had to drill a hole in the bottom of my 2 sputniks as my rats seem to be enjoying peeing in them and then sleeping there while sodden in their own urine  At least now it will drain. I give them 3 hammocks and put 2 in the wash every 4 days in rotation. There are 5 boys in there though :D

Re: New rescue rats arriving at weekend- intros necessary!

They now have access to both levels of the SRS and the Tictac wheel downstairs. The extra space hasn't caused much in the way of squabbles so far. They have spent more time sleeping in different places, but the rats in each group tend to change constantly so there's no obvious avoidance going on. Lu...

Re: Cushing syndrome

How was a diagnosis of Cushings made?
It actually requires 2 blood tests to diagnose. If that hasn't been done then I suspect he has a PT rather than Cushings.

Re: Galastop useage

I can't find anything that explains the mechanism by which it triggers abortion. It reduces prolactin levels, so it's likely to be some indirect result of this (hormone interactions are always complicated, and prolactin could impact on lots of things). I would have thought that it's possible that i...

Re: Calcivet dosage help please.

Make sure you also offer a bottle of plain water. That way if you do make it too concentrated for some reason it doesn't put your rats at risk of dehydration or mineral overdose. As a general rule it's safer to make up supplements weaker than the recommended strength rather than stronger. My 5 are g...

Re: SRS modifications

I was wanting to remove the whole of the shelf section, and have the wheels attach to the bottom of the cage itself - but having peered closely, I'm concerned that the wheels wouldn't fit directly into the cage frame. As it happens, I've now discovered that I've got room to turn my SRSs into triple...

Re: first rat! can't wait!

If you get them young enough they should be freaked out enough to bond in a new scared environment- just be sure they are both female

Re: SRS modifications

Looking at my SRS you could remove the bottom shelf= however it will make the structure at the bottom a bit less strong. That could turn out to be an issue if you stacked another heavy cage onto I guess. The steel tubing of the SRS is pretty robust though. If I was going to remove the shelf myself I...

Re: Lack of success with the carrier method - please help!

Sounds like you haven't given it long enough in the carrier. Mine were in there for over 3 days even though it was a pretty tight squeeze (but that's kind of the point). If your carrier is too small borrow a cat one from somewhere that can take a water bottle. I can highly recommend a nice long driv...

Re: Ivermectin groomed off?

No, don't repeat straight away. Ivomec also works orally so they may or may not have all had a full dose anyway (assuming the grooming ring was even!).
