Re: What to look for in a vet?

Just to add, in Edinburgh I'd be wanting to go to the Royal Dick at Pentlands They also suggested we bring them both in together for the operation so that Nutmeg had some company post-op, and they both stayed in overnight. Not sure whether that's out of the ordinary or not, but it gave me a lot of ...

Re: What to look for in a vet?

Another vote for the Dick Vet. They really know their stuff but are still willing to discuss things with you. They've also been really good with me about looking at long term plans, not just treating exactly what is in front of them (for example I have a system with them for treating respiratory iss...

Re: Clearing lice

Thank you both! I know what you mean about the skin crawling - despite knowing the lice are species specific I'm constantly itching

The second dosing is already planned so hopefully between that and my paranoid cleaning we should get it :D

Clearing lice

My group has managed to develop a lice infestation :angryrat: . They were Ivermectined on Tuesday and had a full cage clean. I've washed everything fabric at 90, everything plastic has been sprayed with disinfectant and wiped down, and wooden toys are in the freezer just now. However I've got a few ...

Baby corn and french beans for breakfast :)

Chefs' medleys of vegetables are so handy.

Re: Anyone used a nebuliser before?

I've used one with positive results, but I know there can be problems with stress. I've minimised it by using a small, ultrasonic nebuliser and feeding the nozzle into a carry case (which they are used to) then covering with a towel. They get a little bit of food in with them to keep them occupied a...

Re: Extreme wheel tail

Thanks everyone! She's never had a wheel, and I'm fairly certain it is genetic. My main concern really is the potential for spinal damage in the long term with her tail pressing down on it - the curled tail itself doesn't seem to bother her in the slightest! She's definitely not being bred and isn't...

Extreme wheel tail

One of my rats (Adora) has had a wheel tail almost since I got her (January - she is now 10 months old) which has never been much of an issue, but more recently has started affecting her movement. It either comes down to the side very close to her body pushing her back legs sideways as she moves or ...

Re: Potential ZGT - how long did you get?

Thanks again everyone!

She's on antibiotics for the respiness which should also help if it is an abscess. She's not impressed with the three syringes being forced into her twice a day but seems to be happy enough to forgive me if baby food is provided afterwards!

Re: Potential ZGT - how long did you get?

Thank you everyone!

Luckily at today's appointment the lump has gone down quite a lot so it looks like it isn't a tumour after all, and more likely an abscess. Will be keeping a close eye on her, but hopefully I'm going to have more time with her :)

Potential ZGT - how long did you get?

Last week one of my girls came up with a lump on her face almost overnight. Went into the vet's where she had a fine needle aspirate done in the hopes it was an abscess but the conclusion was it's actually a tumour. Unfortunately there was a lot of swelling and bruising around it so he couldn't get ...

Thanks! The logical side of me is going "don't be so stupid, there's almost no chance they've got it" and the less logical side is just going "ringwoorrrrrmmmmmm" ;)

Rats and ringworm

I had a work friend round on Thursday night, and on Friday she was diagnosed with ringworm (a single small patch on her face). Luckily we didn't have the rats out (the only time she's been here we haven't!) and I've washed everything fabric she had direct or indirect contact with on a hot wash so I'...

Re: Tricks for getting medicine into them?

I've found baby food works quite well! You can mix the medication into it if they're food orientated or use it as a post medicine reward (I've got one who does brilliantly with the first method, and one who will tolerate a syringe in the mouth if there's baby food afterwards!).
