Re: lump with a hole
How old is she? Is she being her usual self? Without pictures, assuming the white bit is a head then it would be an abscess. I would advise getting her to a vet to get checked out where they can confirm whether it is or not, and if it is hopefully drain in then provide you with the things you need t...

That's looking endless amounts better. None of this wussy light scabbing over malarkey, just growing the new skin and getting on with it
Rats are truly awesome, I'm so glad your boy is doing well x

Glad to see that wound looking better. The pics are so similar to the biopsy site I had *shudders* Big scritches for the brave boy. His should be a lot better when healed than mine is too!
I'm loving the prep tray as well, yoggies to hand so he doesn't have to wait for them, you are well trained!

Re: Sneezing rats
Rabbits will eat cardboard when they are lacking natural fibre even when surrounded by hay. Perhaps your boy, if he is filling himself up on protein and sugars, is craving fibre and the litter smells the most suited? I would try to adjust the way you feed them so that they have to eat the dry mix, a...

Re: Open surgical wound *warning- pics of open wound*
Aww poor Zep. Bless him, should be surgery, healing, then back to ratty endeavors, not all this messing. His wound looks a little like mine did after a biopsy, and I was put on abx at that point, so I'd definitely say they are needed. It wasn't until that was cleared that it even attempted to heal, ...

I have no advice, but I'm sorry. I'll have you both in my thoughts in the morning. Do let us know how you get on.

Re: teeth.
They've given me such a fright before, but yes, assuming that bottom and top teeth are level then it's normal.
Humans have a fixed jaw, but rats can flex theirs. Do a quick Google, but the first time I noticed I was horrified and ready to run the boys to a vet

Re: rat with red nose
If they're new rats sneezing can be caused by being in a new environment, but it's worth popping them to the vet to check them out. The vet should be able to hear if their breathing is a little off. Cost of abx will vary I would think. When I took my four for a check up and came out with Baytril for...

Re: what is the best bedding to use for rats?
They get fitch in the litter trays (as I use it for the bunnies), fleece on the base of the top half of the tower and a deep amount of finacard in the bottom of the tower for digging. So everything

Re: Rat names for boys
My boys are:
Frodo
Sam
Merry
Pippin
They fit very well too!
New boys to the group soon, keeping their names secret until I know which is which (or find that one doesn't suit)

I am so sorry to hear about Marley. You did what was necessary for the sake of the group, and it's so sad that this has been the result.

Re: Giving baytril
Update! Chicken and sweet squash baby food went down a treat with baytril mixed in. Also having read a few threads on the old forum last night it occurred to me to use my finger rather than a spoon to give it them and they much preferred that, since they wouldn't go near the same mix on a spoon. Pan...

OH has been told to get fish paste now also
I'm so glad I'm not the only one who gets 'the look' for doing that. All of my rabbits vigourously clean themselves after I've picked them up as well so I'm starting to think I may smell or something!
