Re: Old lady - not giving up! (Galastop?)

Ideally you do need to carry on giving it ... if you don't, then the mass will start to grow again since you haven't actually removed the tumourous cells, you have just slowed their growth rate.

Re: Should i be worried??

Yes, take her back to the Vets for a check up ... post-op fluid swelling can become infected in some cases, and also, there is a chance that the swelling is a suture related abscess too, and you need to make sure it isn't, or get her on some antibiotics if it is ... I would be quite concerned that s...

Re: Slight throat swelling and small lump in throat

I've no idea what the swelling associated with SDAV looks or feels like ... It's the salivary glands that swell up in SDAV, and they swell a lot, so much so that the whole of the throat tends to become enlarged. What you describe sound more like a small abscess, cyst, or activated lymph node to me ...

Re: Old lady - not giving up! (Galastop?)

If I remember correctly, compared to rat guide it works out that we hugely "underdose" in the UK due to the concentration of Galastop Just to pick up on this point ... the doses on rat guide for galastop were formulated using a small number of studies that had been done on rats using the drug, in t...

Re: Strange fit- help!

That possibility, particularly since one of the symptoms is blindness, and since around 85% of rats develop a PT (symptomatic or otherwise) is so tiny as to be negligible.

Re: Galastop dose for ratty lumps

What reason are you being given for them not prescribing galastop? There are no research papers as such for galastop. I produced my own study on it after researching it myself and testing it on my own rats over the course of 6 years. I believe that much of its use in the UK now is based on the work ...

Re: Strange fit- help!

We discussed care - she gave him a short-term steroid injection to last 48 hours, and said to watch him and see if it made an improvement. She says at this earlier stage, the problem is likely to be caused by the tumour itself rather than swelling, which is the body's reaction later on to the tumou...

Re: Strange fit- help!

I thought his behaviour sounded like he'd gone blind ... the relatively sudden onset and it affecting both sides (accurate assumption?) is quite indicative of a PT too.

Re: Strange fit- help!

Kidneys would be a urine test, I take it Yes, with possible blood test too. Also check for general signs of anaemia; kidney disease causes anaemia. and liver...? What's the test for that? Also a urine test and a look at his poops, and a blood test too. And the treatment......? For kidney failure - ...

Re: Old boy getting bitey with other rats

Have you considered that the grumpiness could be related to the long term metacam and any resulting gastrointestinal irritation he is now on the receiving end of? And by the way, malignant lymphoma kills rats VERY quickly indeed so I very much doubt that he has 'lymphatic cancer' ... if he has survi...

Re: Strange fit- help!

Just reading back over the thread ... no one has mentioned any causes for seizures other than direct neurological issues ... so I just want to check, have you ruled out kidney failure and liver failure? (both of which can also cause seizures)

Re: Strange fit- help!

The vet did suggest an MRI as the next step (she's new to the practice and I am still sounding her out)- if I thought it would do Rockall any good, I wouldn't care about the expense, but I'm guessing it would either tell us nothing (which wouldn't mean that there isn't a problem, he wouldn't be bet...

Re: Strange fit- help!

How can I help him? Patience and time. Warn him when you are going to touch him or pick him up, either with your voice or by brushing his whiskers with your fingers to let him know what is coming ... always take him to the exact same place on the sofa at playtime so when you put him down he knows e...

Re: Strange fit- help!

He can see ok - if I put my face up to the cage, he will look up, alert That isn't enough to make sure he isn't blind because his whiskers will pick up changes in air movements and that will let him know you are there ... his behaviour to me sounds very much like he has gone blind, and the test you...
