Re: Rat health warning to people at Alijanes last Sunday

Just thought I'd update here. Rats are fighting tonight so must be feeling better. Vet today deemed them to have clear lungs, we're now looking at URTIs, myco, etc etc. Then there's Aether. It's touch and go, he's fought it so far but I think he's tired now. It'll break my heart. Best wishes to the ...

Re: Rat health warning to people at Alijanes last Sunday

I didn't realise there was a thread here.

All 18 of mine are affected to varying degrees, some just sneezing, some critical.

They are on 10mgs of doxy twice a day, at present, apart from the two babies which are on 5.

Re: Want To Make A Mix But Confused

I feed mine Rupert Rat (or whatever it's called now!) + garlic, seaweed and barley rings from local equine supplier. Plus veggies and leftovers and cod liver oil capsules which they just love.

Re: Chewing toenails til they bleed

Are you sure it's not just that he's catching his nails on things when he moves about and they're being ripped off? It's quite common. Sorry if that sounds patronising, I don't mean it to, it's just sometimes we get so worried about them we imagine the worst, if you know what I mean? :)

Re: What's wrong with Andrea?

Unfortunately rats can get ill and go downhill rather quickly, so please do take her to the vet asap and let us know how she gets on. :luck: What does she normally eat, and what are her favourite foods? Keep trying different things to tempt her, foods that are soft and easy to eat like baby food so...

Re: What's wrong with Andrea?

It sounds like pneumonia, which left untreated can very quickly become fatal, I would get her to the vet (or have a telephone consult with your vet) asap as baytril may not be the best AB for her, also a steroid jab should help her appetite which is very important if it is pneumonia as they use so m...

Re: Urgent: one rat dead, one rat in bad way, is this SDAV?

Just seen this, we had SDA at least six months back and it is very important to treat for secondary infections, ABs won't help the SDAV itself but they can help support the rat so it has a better chance of recovery. Metacam is good too because it's an anti-inflammatory (I think) as well as pain reli...

Re: bumblefoot

Ask your vet for Vetalintex Hydrogel. I had an old rat with terrible bumblefoot and it sorted it out in no time at all, I was amazed.

I put the gel on then stick a plaster over the top for the first few days.

Good luck :luck:

Re: [Images] Tumor/abcess in groin region? (Buck)

I wouldn't recommend anti-biotics for an abscess that hasn't yet popped. They will only hinder the "bursting" process. I would carry on soaking it (I too use very hot water) until the scab can be easily removed and the thing can drain.

Re: Can rats have ibuprofen or other pain killers?

The short answer is yes - most of it is tested on them anyway. For example, mine have the infants Calpol or Calprofen if I've run out of metacam. They can also have things like Sudafed for congestion. But as for doses, I get my info from the NFRS handbook, I'm afraid I don't know it off the top of m...

Re: Slightly morbid question - having 2 rats PTS together?

So sorry Muskrat :(

A while ago I had two rats pts together, brothers, who I felt it was best they went together and they cuddled up together in the tub for the gas, went to sleep, then had an injection each. I don't let mine be injected without anaesthetic unless there's really no time for it.
