Worrysome skin problem

There's a good chance we will be taking over a pair of does when our friends leave for the UK. So yesterday I went to get to know the girls and spotted this growing on the tip of her ear. http://www.l2i.org/Rat/Sub_01/BlackJackEar01.jpg http://www.l2i.org/Rat/Sub_01/BlackJackEar02.jpg It has the app...

Periodic checkups?

My two are now 6 months old. Should I be taking them for a check up? There seems nothing wrong with them, but do you take them for shots and a look over?

Re: Is it right to PTS out of guilt?

If you both have reached this point, then you know what you have to do. It's painful, gut wrenchingly painful to even contemplate, but it's much much better than prolonging the inevitable.

Some things may be too basic for you and others may go over your head. The important thing is to try and understand what I'm get...

Clipping claws

When we had cats, we would occasionally clip their claws. I understand that a lot of people do this to rats. I have just one question... does it affect their ability to climb trees and people?

Re: Routinely spaying girls?

My vet wasn;t particular keen on the idea preferring to do the lad instead. I gather it's a lot quicker to do makes and less chance of death under anesthesia.

Re: An intresting thought- rat insurance?

"Dear Madam, Our loss adjustor has reviewed your case and have concluded that your rodent is beyond economical treatment. Given the advanced age of your rodent at 10 months , which is 83% of the natural life of a rat in the wild, we have deducted a commensurate amount from the purchase price of a ne...

Re: neutered boy

They are meant to shrink back to 'proportionally human' size. I have never been tempted to feel them though, and he has never been tempted to teabag me, so I can't tell you about texture and hardness.

Our lad, formerly known as Mr Bigballs, had his op yesterday and has had no swelling. Best get yours to a vet. I suspect an infection.

Re: Recovery from huge shocks [possibly urgent]

ZDP-189 , "usually" is the key word here ;) acapae_wolf , hope your rat will be allright soon! I did a little research and it seems I was wrong. The quote I wrongly remembered was: "You can drop a mouse down a thousand-yard mine shaft; and, on arriving at the bottom, it gets a slight shock and walk...

Re: Human diseases?

HFMD is a virus and I can find nothing linking it to rats, including no medical studies conducted on rodents. I agree caution is recommended.

HFMD should not be confused with FMD which I believe can infect rats.

Human diseases?

My daughter has hand, foot and mouth. Are the rats at risk?

While I'm asking, are there any other diseases the rats can get from us?
